HAPPY NEW YEAR FOLKS!
So, yes i've been slack over the last few months, too many parties, too much work and too much holiday!
First up, a quick review of a wonderful gig i saw on saturday night at Yah Yah's. My first gig of the year was Oh Mercy lead singer Alexander Gow headlining a stripped back, acoustic show at Smith Street's Yah Yah's and what a wonderful evening it was. I spent the day at a friends birthday party in carlton gardens and then strolled down the wonderfully bohemian streets of brunswick! Turns out the support band, Kieran Ryan from Kid Sam was a housemate of said friend whose party i was attending, which can i just say totally blew my mind! Kieran's gig was beautiful (yes i am a fangirl!) as was Alexander Gow's and their wonderful rendition of Icehouse's Great Southern Land was the highlight of the evening!
Check out Oh Mercy on their myspace page and Kieran Ryan and Kid Sam at their myspace page
Now to the new music i'm really digging at the moment.
Firstly, Smith Westerns- a bunch of 19-20 year olds from Chicago making Thin Lizzy type music have released their second album and i'm totally in love with them! Weekend is their single check it out below!
Tennis are next up- god these guys have been my soundtrack to summer- layed back, beautiful, makes me want to dance in a summer dress on the beach!
Foster the People-Pumped Up Kicks
This song just will not leave my head. Nuf said! Check it out below!
The Vaccines-Wrecking Bar (Ra Ra Ra)
A mix between The Clash/Sex Pistols and The Jam, Punk and Mod at the same time-these guys have been hailed as the next big thing on NME- i just dig the music!
Check them out below!

TOP 10 FILMS OF THE YEAR
1.The Social Network-i cannot stop watching this film-yes i fall at the feet of anything aaron Sorkin writes but i love this film-beautiful and poignant! Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake give wonderful performances-and that opening scene is epic ( as epic as any dialogue heavy scene i have seen! kudos to Sorkin, Eisenberg and Rooney mara, and Fincher for that scene-beautiful!)
2. Inception- just wow- mind bending, action packed, star studded-Nolan is a genius-Dicaprio, Gordon-Levit, Page, Caine, Murphy, Wantanbe, Cotillard, Berenger and Rao all do tremendous work but the film is stolen by Tom Hardy, who is just wonderful as Eames! Was my favourite film till i saw The Social Network
3.Scott Pilgrim vs the World- i'm not going to lie, i am an edgar wright fangirl! So it comes as no surprise that i love this film! I am a fan of the comic books by Bryan Lee O'Malley so was pumped for this film! Mixing comic books, video games, music and action into such an epic of epic epicness was just phenomenal! Michael Cera is perfect as Scott, Kieran Culkan as his gay roomate Wallace Wells steals the show as does Chris Evans as evil ex-boyfriend Lucas Lee-but everyone is great-love love this film
4. In the loop- Armando Ianucci wrote the hit tv satire The Thick of It about british politics and in the loop takes that scenario to the big screen- hilarious and informative-In the Loop , like the Thick of It is made by great writing and the character of Malcolm Tucker! Peter Capaldi is amazing as Tucker!
5.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1-fan of the book fan of the movies, am so dying to see the last film-darker and more gripping-bring on Voldermort and the battle at Hogwarts!
6. Fantastic Mr Fox- released in Australia earlier this year, Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr Fox is emotional, funny, fantastical and just god damn moving! It really is..fantastic!
7.Animal Kingdom- Great Aussie film-Jacki Weaver totally deserves an Oscar for her role as Grandma Smurf. Ben Mendhlson, Joel Edgartan, Guy Pearce, Sullivan Stapleton, Luke Ford and new comer James Frecheville give stellar performances in this Macbethian, pulp fictionist Aussie Drama that is both gripping and disturbing great Aussie film!
8. The Kings Speech-WOW, what can i say, this film was very close to being my number 1-saw it on wednesday. If Colin Firth does not win an Oscar for this film, i will be shocked i say, shocked! Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helen Bonham Carter give outstanding performances! One of the best films of the year
9.TRON: LEGACY- Ok, its nerdy, yes the plot leaves a bit to be desired, and yes Jeff Bridges is laying the Dude, but i loved every minute of Tron. Michael Sheen steals the show, but the graphics, the Daft Punk Sound track, the action and an awesome cast wins over the film for me. Plot scmot, the first tron was about the graphics, as is this. Epic in 3D!

The inevitable top 10, 20, 30 songs/albums lists have arrived!
Hey folks,
It is that time of year we have all been looking forward to! top 10 albums of the year lists have begun to grace blogs, radio shows and music magazines!
Time for my top ten albums of the year. I pretty much had the composition of my top five albums organised in september, so the second half of my list was a lot tougher to work out. There will be honourable mentions as well, but lets begin at album number 10!
!0. The Drums-The Drums
I can't tell you how much i love this album. Surfy-pop, meets dance meets Joy Division! I saw these guys at the East Brunswick Club with a friend and i the gig was one of the best i have been to all year! I maybe a little biased though, seeing as we got to hang with the band after the gig and they gave us free tickets to their supporting gig of florence and the machine the night after, but thats beside the point! Such a fun awesome album!
Check out Lets Go Surfing below, perfect summer song (and it references Obama, which makes it even cooler!)
9. The National-High Violet
I am an extremely late comer to The National( ok as late as two weeks ago), and have been extremely sceptical of the band since my sister raved on about them for 3 months. I freely admit i was wrong about, and my sister has been on the ball about cloud control and dan kelly this year! This album is just beautiful. Lead singer Matt Berninger's baritone voice is sexy and full of sorrow that just pulls at the heartstrings! He reminds me a lot of Johnny Cash's voice. Bloodbuzz Ohio, Terrible Love, Anyones Ghost and Runaway are highlights. Check out Bloodbuzz Ohio below!
8.Miami Horror- Illumination
Melbourne based band Miami Horror's debut album Illumination was given to me by my housemate, and god i can't stop playing this album! If the indication of a good dance album is that it makes you dance then this has not stopped making me dance all year! Highlights are I look to you with melbourne singer Kimbra, Sometimes and Holiday. I posted earlier on I look to you so below is sometimes! Enjoy!
7. Foals-Total Life Forever
I am such am obsessive Foals fan! SO much so that when lead singer Yannis Philippakis walked passed me at the mercury lounge in new york i didn't notice him! I played Foals debut album all throughout my masters degree last year and Total Life Forever is just as good! Spanish Sahara and Miami are highlights. Miami is in my top 5 songs of the year!
6.Dan Kelly- Dan Kelly's Dream
Dan Kelly is legendary Australian Musician Paul Kelly's nephew and the talent runs in the family! This album is just so cleaver lyrically i couldn't leave it off! enjoy bindi irwin apocalypse jam below!
5. Arcade Fire-The Suburbs
What can i say about this album? could have easily been my number 1 album of the year. Epic, moving and just a god damn awesome rock and roll album, Canada's Arcade fire return in fine form with an amazing album! From start to finish a delight to listen to! Month of May, City of No Children, the Suburbs, Ready to Start and We used to wait highlights. We used to wait is below and my favourite off the album!
4. Deerhunter-Halycon Digest
Such a beautiful album! Bradford Cox's song writing is amazing on this album! From revival, to memory boy, to the glorious Desire Lines and the sax dripped Coronardo are just awesome! Desire Lines top 5 songs of the year! Revival is below!
3. Cloud Control- Bliss Release
From the Blue Mountains in NSW, this four piece has produced one of the best debut' i've heard all year! Sounding like a mix between fleet foxes, vampire weekend and talking heads, cloud control points to a new era of bands leading Australian music! Meditation Song #2, Ghost Story, My Fear #2 are favourites! Can't wait to see them at laneway festival next year! Below is this is what i said!
2. Laura Marling-I Speak Because I Can
What a voice, and what song writing talent. I have been a massive fan of Marlings since 2007 and her first album Alas i Cannot Swim. I first saw her when she was an 18 year old, and she seemed almost shy of performing, yet she had this unbelievable voice and lyric writing skill beyond her years that commanded the stage. Her second album I Speak Because I Can has drawn comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan and i tell you they are completely warranted! I have seen her three times this year! Below is Devil's Spoke.
1. The Walkmen-Lisbon
This album was always going to top my list. 2008's album You and Me was epic, but the Walkmen's Lisbon is just on another planet! Most of The Walkmen's music has been characterised by melancholy lyrics coupled with heavy drums and jangly guitars. The melancholy lyrics are still their but the sadness is equally matched with joyous music. The drumming, the guitar, drums, piano and the voice all come together to deliver a uplifting and joyous album that makes me smile every time i listen to it! From opening track Juveniles, Angela Surf City, Blue as Your Blood to the glorious Stranded and its wonderful use of horns that reminds me of christmas and snow to the infectious Woe is Me (my favourite song of the year), this album reminds me of friends, family, summers spent at the beach and in the sun sipping beer, snow christmas and fun times. It is an album that stays with me days after i listen to it! Below is Angela Surf City and Woe is Me!

Miami Horror and Kimbra
My housemate introduced me to Miami Horrow, a great dance band, singing here with Kimbra another great artists we should be supporting.
Boy and Bear
I have seen these guys four times in the last year, supporting Laure Marling and Mumford and Sons, and my love for them keeps growing. Like Fleet Foxes, the mix beautiful harmonies with the folky rock of nash and young. Really great band we should be supporting.
